Good Hope FM, Cape Town’s Original, is rallying passionately behind a cause that lies at the heart of its values: uplifting communities with practical care and compassion. On Friday, 18 July, the station will honour Nelson Mandela’s legacy by packing life-saving meals between 9 a.m. and 12 noon at the GrandWest Market Hall with Rise Against Hunger Africa – an organisation that provided 5 254 598 meals to those in need in a single year.
The Morning Show with Leigh-Anne Williams will be echoing the vibe on-air, broadcasting live from the event.
This activation forms part of a nationwide Mandela Day campaign that will see thousands of volunteers come together to pack 2.5 million meals over 25 days, directly benefitting 225 Early Childhood Development centres across the country. This year’s event continues Good Hope FM’s proud tradition of being more than just Cape Town’s Original hit radio station – it’s a station that shows up, steps up and does something practical to help.
Rise Against Hunger Africa is a non-profit organisation dedicated to ending hunger on the African continent through education, sustainable development and meal packaging initiatives.
At the Cape Town leg of the campaign, Good Hope FM presenters and staff will roll up their sleeves alongside a massive crowd of other volunteers to pack thousands of nutritious, shelf-stable meals that will be distributed through school feeding schemes and community outreach programmes across the region. While Mandela Day calls for just 67 minutes of service, Good Hope FM knows that, for many South Africans, hunger is a daily struggle, and tackling it requires consistent effort, partnership and passion. The station is calling on businesses across the Cape Town metro to join them at GrandWest for a morning of heartfelt work for a beautiful cause.
Listeners are encouraged to visit Rise Against Hunger’s website for more info on ways to get involved and spread the love beyond Mandela Month.
“This initiative is a powerful reminder that real change doesn’t always come from grand gestures – sometimes it comes from ding the most basic things with purpose,” says Masi Mdingane, Business Manager for Good Hope FM and 5FM.
“By adding our voices and hands to this phenomenal cause on Mandela Day, we hope to serve not only food, but dignity, hope, connection and empowerment to those who need it most, and we can’t do it without you.”
